Human birth is precious, as scriptures tell us it is attained only after passing through 8.4 million yonis (births or life forms). Upon birth, a person’s essential nature can be observed through the yoni, or birthmark, they inherit. The yoni recorded in a person’s astrological chart reveals insights into their attitude, life values, distinctive qualities, preferences, and inherent nature. In astrology, the Rishis have defined 14 primary yonis: Horse, Elephant, Ram, Serpent, Dog, Cat, Cow, Buffalo, Tiger, Deer, Monkey, Mongoose, Lion, and Rat. A person’s personality can be interpreted using their Nakshatra and Yoni. Each yoni is named after an animal, implying similarities between the nature of that animal and the character traits of individuals associated with that yoni. The yoni is assigned based on the Nakshatra in which the Moon is located at birth. The Moon represents the mind, and thus, the influence of the yoni is reflected in a person’s nature.
Every animal has inherent characteristics. Scholars have tried to correlate these traits with human nature:
- Horse (Ashwini, Shatabhisha Nakshatras): People of this yoni are swift, enthusiastic, adventurous, influential, energetic, and self-disciplined.
- Elephant (Bharani, Revati Nakshatras): Individuals here possess strength, power, grace, intelligence, good memory, and are often calm, yet sometimes careless.
- Ram (Krittika, Pushya Nakshatras): Ram yoni individuals are brave yet somewhat reckless, strong, industrious, generous, and tend to be impetuous.
- Serpent (Rohini, Mrigashira Nakshatras): Known for a quick temper, restlessness, and a strong memory for grudges, these individuals are agile and have a love for food.
- Dog (Various Nakshatras): People with this yoni are brave, energetic, hardworking, loyal to family, disciplined, and honest.
- Cat (Punarvasu, Ashlesha Nakshatras): These individuals can be secretive, courageous, independent, and sometimes ill-willed toward others.
- Cow (Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatras): Known for their calm and harmless nature, cow yoni individuals are optimistic, hardworking, and clever in speech.
- Buffalo (Hasta, Swati Nakshatras): These people can be lazy and untidy, yet they have resilience and a stubborn nature.
- Tiger (Chitra, Vishakha Nakshatras): Tiger yoni people are brave, skilled, independent, and prideful in their work.
- Deer (Anuradha, Jyeshtha Nakshatras): Gentle, sensitive, and sometimes timid, deer yoni individuals have a kind-hearted nature.
- Monkey (Purva Ashadha, Shravana Nakshatras): Known for their mischievous and restless nature, these individuals are often active and quick to react.
- Mongoose (Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra): People in this yoni are determined and resilient, often holding grudges for a lifetime.
- Lion (Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatras): Lion yoni individuals are courageous, self-respecting, adventurous, and responsible but can be lazy at times.
- Rat (Magha, Purva Phalguni Nakshatras): Rats are cunning, careful, quick in their work, and sometimes cause harm for personal gain.
Each yoni type has unique interactions. When arranging marriages, compatibility between yonis is considered. The couple’s charts are matched with a scoring system:
- Same Yoni: 4 points
- Friendly Yoni: 3 points
- Neutral Yoni: 2 points
- Enemy Yoni: 1 point
- Extreme Enemy Yoni: 0 points
In modern times, yoni dosha (incompatibility) is not taken as seriously, raising the question of whether it should be a deciding factor when other aspects are favorable.
