What is Gochar?

Gochar refers to the transit of the planets through the houses in a person’s horoscope. Each planet stays in a particular house for a certain period, and after completing that period, it moves to the next house (or passes from one rashi to another). This movement is called Gochar. In the Lagna chart, planets move counterclockwise, while the nodes (Rahu and Ketu) move clockwise.

Here is the duration of each planet’s transit through a house:

  • Moon: 2.25 days
  • Mars: 45 days
  • Mercury: 15-20 days
  • Jupiter: 13 months (1.25 years)
  • Venus: 20-25 days
  • Saturn: 2.5 years
  • Sun: 1 month
  • Rahu: 1.5 years
  • Ketu: 1.5 years

A Lagna chart is a snapshot of the universe at the time of birth, and from there, the planets begin their journey through the horoscope. Transit is an important part of predicting events in a person’s life.

A particular Mahadasha and the position of the Mahadasha planet give a broad picture of how the period will unfold and whether it will bring good, bad, or average results. However, we observe that Mahadashas of some planets are very long (18 or 20 years), but we don’t experience the same results throughout the entire Dasha period. The question then arises: why do the results vary even when the Mahadasha indicates good or bad outcomes?

This is where the transit of planets, along with Antaradasha and Parashantar Dasha, comes into play. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the position of a planet in transit when a particular Antaradasha begins. The results of the Mahadasha and Antaradasha are always influenced by Gochar.

Similarly, Pratyantar Dasha, Sukshma Dasha, and Prana Dasha are also significant and should be considered in the analysis. From this, further analysis can be done.
